Through the grant, Laura Manigrasso, an ACC Culinary Arts alumna, has been selected to serve a one year appointment as an NC Hunger Corps VISTA at the school. Manigrasso will work to address campus and community food insecurity, in particular spearheading a campus community garden to provide students with fresh produce to complement food pantry supports.

Manigrasso will also host healthy cooking demonstrations to help students learn to prepare healthy meals from food donations. The ACC alumna has decades of experience in both education and serving as an active food pantry/meal serving volunteer.

AmeriCorps VISTA is a national service program administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). NC Campus Compact, housed at Elon University, is a partner in the endeavor. ACC President Dr. Algie Gatewood is a board member of NC Campus Compact.

“We believe the grant will provide additional capacity to support students and the community while fostering a strong sense of civic engagement and service learning,” said Dr. Gatewood.
