From Classmates to Family: A Story of Friendship, Perseverance, and Purpose

By Jaylen Webb | 05/19/2026

Some stories come full circle in the most beautiful ways. What began years ago in a classroom at Alamance Community College has grown into a story of friendship, determination, and family.

Janet Byrd, Lead Evening Nurse Aide Instructor at Alamance Community College, has spent years shaping the futures of aspiring healthcare professionals. Among her students were two young women whose lives would become forever connected — her daughter, Blair Byrd-Wright, and Blair’s close friend, Hannah Byrd.

From the moment Blair was born, Janet knew there was something special about her daughter.

“From the minute she was born, she was always bright,” Janet recalls.

But Blair’s path was not without obstacles. During her early school years, one teacher doubted her ability to succeed academically. Rather than allowing those words to discourage her, Blair used them as motivation.

“That became her fuel,” Janet said. “She was determined to prove the doubters wrong.”

Blair attended Alamance Community College under her mother, where she met Hannah. The two quickly formed a close friendship built on shared dreams, long study sessions, and a passion for helping others.

Their bond only grew stronger over the years.

Hannah continued her education at the University of North Carolina, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). She now works in Greensboro as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner specializing in babies and children with Gastrointestinal diseases and conditions. She most recently achieved another major milestone by graduating from Nurse Practitioner school.

Along the way, life brought an unexpected twist — Hannah met Janet’s son, fell in love, and married him. What began as a friendship in the classroom became a lifelong sisterhood, making Blair and Hannah not only best friends but sisters-in-law.

Meanwhile, Blair pursued her own ambitious journey in medicine. After attending UNC Wilmington, she worked as a graduate assistant in organic chemistry while preparing for medical school. Her path required resilience and perseverance; it took her three attempts before she was accepted into medical school at UNC Chapel Hill.

Blair never gave up.

During medical school, she discovered a passion for pathology — a specialty that perfectly matched her curiosity, precision, and love for science. She recently received her white coat and will graduate from medical school in May before beginning a four-year pathology residency at Duke University.

Today, Janet beams with pride as she reflects on how far both young women have come.

“As a mother and educator, I could not be more proud of Blair and Hannah,” she said. “They have both worked incredibly hard for everything they’ve achieved.”

Janet also expressed gratitude to Alamance Community College for the support and opportunities that helped shape their journeys.

“ACC gave them a strong foundation and a place to grow,” she said. “Our family will always be thankful for the encouragement and support they received there.”
