A clear, positive, and concise syllabus is an essential teaching tool. The syllabus should include a description of the course, the learning objectives for the course, a course outline, the class attendance policy, the course materials required, the grading policy including the numbers and kinds of assessments to be used, the instructor’s office hours and other ways the instructor may be contacted, and the college statement for students with special needs. Additional information that the instructor believes is important to student success should be included. The college expects all instructors to distribute a syllabus within the first week of class. A sample is in Appendix D.
