Horticulture Technology

Mission Statement

The Alamance Community College Horticulture Technology Department is dedicated to educating current and future generation professionals in our industry through quality instruction and practical application of knowledge and innovative techniques. We are committed to supporting local industry, enhancing health and the environment through stewardship and sharing knowledge of plants, the land and natural systems that sustain life on earth.

The Horticulture Technology program at Alamance Community College offers courses that provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a career in the green industry. It is a unique program designed to provide comprehensive knowledge of horticultural practices through a hands-on approach.

The program offers a variety of courses which cover the broad range of subject matter within the discipline of Horticulture. Some of the course topics are as follows: applied plant science, plant identification, propagation, greenhouse operations, arboriculture, landscape irrigation, sales, marketing, landscape design, construction and management.

The overall goal of this program is to provide students with a thorough and well-rounded education in horticulture that prepares them for employment in the industry. In addition to the knowledge and skills implemented in the program, students are introduced and exposed to the industry through field trips, guest speakers and numerous opportunities to attend industry trade-shows, conferences and symposiums. These opportunities offered to students enhance the educational experience by providing a better look into the diverse career paths available in horticulture as well as networking opportunities with potential employers in the local area and throughout the nation.

Salary Information

Entry-level range: $8.50-$14.50 an hour

With five years experience: $35,000 – $55,000 per year (contingent on economy and geographic location)
