The Academic and Career Readiness program prepares adults to take the official GED® and/or HiSET® tests to complete their high school credentials. Areas of study include Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, and Computer Skills. All of our classes emphasize contextualized study that will prepare you to tackle real life challenges in both higher education and the workforce. Classes are offered morning, afternoon, and evenings; distance options are also available. We also offer test fee scholarships and selected free college classes through our Basic Skills Plus program to qualified students enrolled in our program.
The Adult Basic Education (ABE) program includes basic reading, writing, and math skills. These FREE classes are appropriate for beginning adult readers through the intermediate reading level who have the ability to benefit from an academic setting as determined by ACC’s reading and math assessments.
Students may enter ABE courses at any time and progress at their own pace. ABE students receive targeted reading and math instruction in a small group environment by trained specialists in our classrooms and computer labs so that they may transition to High School Equivalency (GED® and HiSET®) level classes. ABE classes are offered morning, afternoon, and evening at ACC’s main campus and the Dillingham Center.
GED® and HiSET® tests are available in English and Spanish.
Students who achieve passing scores on each of the GED® or HiSET® tests are awarded a High School Equivalency diploma by the State Board of the North Carolina Community College System. The GED® and HiSET® are both nationally recognized legal equivalents of a high school diploma. These credentials serve the same purpose as a high school diploma in meeting most job requirements and are accepted in place of a high school diploma at most community colleges and four-year colleges and universities.
Who can enroll?
Anyone 18 years or older! Read below if you are under 18 and still wish to enroll.
Potential students who are 16 or 17 years old and who wish to enroll in the Academic & Career Readiness program must meet specific requirements set by the state of North Carolina. These requirements may include (but are not limited to) a release form to be signed by the superintendent and the principal of the school where they last attended, and notarized and signed by the parent or guardian. Also, there may be a waiting period before enrollment. Just as in the public schools, 16- and 17-year-olds must meet state requirements as set by the Drivers License Program or lose their license. The requirements for the Drivers License Program are to attend six consecutive months, to attend 60 hours per month (20 days), and to make reasonable academic progress.
