Thank you for considering ACC to further your education!  Whether you are resuming college studies or just beginning to work toward your degree, you will find the variety of courses, the individual attention, and the supportive atmosphere at ACC provide a solid foundation for your higher education.

Steps in the admissions process vary depending on what you plan to accomplish at ACC.  All students (except for high school students entering the Career and College Promise program) must obtain a N.C. residency determination at www.ncresidency.org prior to submitting an ACC application.

Degree, Diploma, Certificate Seeking or Transfer Students (New or Returning)  

Admissions Process for New and Returning Students:

  1. Obtain a residency determination at www.ncresidency.org.  The residency determination must be done prior to your application submission.
  2. Once you have chosen a degree program, complete the online admissions application. (Note: Students interested in transferring to a four-year college/university should enroll as a degree-seeking student in the Associate in Arts or the Associate in Science program.)
  3. Begin the financial aid process, if needed.
  4. When you receive your ACC welcome packet, promptly activate your ACCess account so you can receive pertinent information regarding registration, financial aid, orientation, and current events.  Click here for instructions on setting up your ACCess account.
  5. Submit official high school transcript (or GED/Adult High School equivalent). High school transcripts are not required for students with an earned Associate degree or higher.  If you are a returning student who previously submitted transcripts, you do not need to resubmit your transcripts unless your prior enrollment was more than five years ago.
  6. If necessary, take the college’s placement test to determine your English and math course placement. Students graduating high school within 10 years do NOT need placement testing. (Placement and/or course eligibility is determined by high school GPA after the high school transcript is received.) To determine if placement testing is needed, call 336-506-4270 or visit the College’s website. Such things as higher degrees, ACT/SAT scores, or transfer credit may exempt you from testing.
  7. If you are seeking transfer credit or need prerequisite verification, submit an official transcript for colleges/universities attended.
  8. New degree-seeking students may schedule an advising/registration appointment by contacting the Admissions Office at 336-506-4270. 
  9. Attend orientation to learn more about college resources and register for courses. 

Admissions Checklist

Please note the following:

  • Social security numbers are required for the FAFSA (financial aid application) and for tax purposes.
  • Some programs of study, such as Nursing and Dental Assisting, are selective and require additional steps for acceptance.
  • Special needs students should contact Disability Services prior to taking the placement test or enrolling for courses.

Visiting/Non-Degree Students

Students who wish to enroll for course credit but are not seeking a degree, diploma, or certificate from ACC are classified as visiting/non-degree students. Non-degree students are not required to submit high school transcripts, but ARE required to provide documentation that prerequisites have been met, if applicable.

Visiting/Non-Degree Admissions Process:

  1. Obtain a residency determination at www.ncresidency.org.  The residency determination must be done prior to your application submission.
  2. Complete the admissions application.
  3. When you receive your ACC welcome packet, promptly activate your My ACCess accountClick here for instructions on setting up your My ACCess account.
  4. Provide documentation of course prerequisites (if applicable). Documentation may include transcripts of prior coursework, placement scores, or SAT/ACT scores that meet the college’s minimum requirements. (Non-degree students are not required to submit high school transcripts.)
  5. Register for classes. You may register via Self-Service or with an admissions advisor in the Student Success Office (Gee Building) Monday-Thursday (8:00am-7:00pm) and Friday (8:00-5:00pm).

Note: The College operates on a modified schedule during the summer months.  Please check the website for modified hours.

Non-U.S. Citizen Seeking a Degree

Permanent Residents
Applicants who are legal permanent residents of the United States must provide current valid documentation (Permanent Resident Card) from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) before being admitted to Alamance Community College. Employment Authorization Cards are not accepted as proof of residency.

Students who complete high school outside of the U.S. must submit a translated, credentialed transcript to ACC for admission.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to secure the services of an independent academic credential evaluation provider.  The following credentialing agencies are recommended:

Students Seeking F-1 Visa
ACC welcomes international students who have completed a secondary course of study (equivalent to 12 years post-secondary education in the USA) and possess the requisite English proficiency skills necessary to be successful in any of our programs of study.

Admission Requirements

  1. Obtain a residency determination at www.ncresidency.org.  The residency determination must be done prior to your application submission.
  2. Complete the International Student Application.
  3. Submit an official TOEFL test score report or ILETS band score report to determine if EFL courses will be needed to supplement your program of study.  Minimum score requirements for admission without enrolling in supplementary EFL courses are:
    • 88 Internet-based score on TOEFL
    • 6.5 Band score on ILETS
  4. Submit official transcripts from secondary school(s) and/or college(s) attended.  It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide a notarized translation of all transcripts and to secure the services of an independent academic credential evaluation provider.  The following credentialing agencies are recommended:
  5. Submit a notarized affidavit of sponsorship form containing documentation of financial eligibility for F-1 international students.

Once the above admissions requirements have been met, the ACC International Admissions Counselor will release an official acceptance letter and I-20 form to the applicant for use in applying for the F-1 visa in his/her home country.

Other Visas
Applicants must provide current valid documentation from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) before being admitted (as allowed) to Alamance Community College. Questions regarding visas and other statuses (ex: refugee or temporary protective status) may be directed to the Director of Enrollment Management (336-506-4120).

Employment Authorization Permit Holders
Students who are U.S. employment authorization cardholders and have no other documentation or proof of legal status must adhere to eligibility requirements/guidelines of undocumented immigrants.

Undocumented Immigrants
Alamance Community College adheres to the North Carolina legislation regarding the admission of undocumented immigrants in community colleges.

Eligibility Requirements/Guidelines

  • Undocumented immigrants must have graduated from a U.S. public high school, private high school, or home school that operates in compliance with state or local law. Undocumented immigrants with a GED are not considered to have “graduated from a U.S. public high school, private high school, or home school” and therefore are not eligible to be admitted to a community college. An undocumented immigrant with a diploma from an Adult High School that is located in the U.S. and operates or operated in compliance with State or local law is eligible to be admitted to a community college.
  • Undocumented immigrants may not be admitted into a program of study that requires a professional license for admission since federal law prohibits states from granting professional licenses to undocumented immigrants.
  • Undocumented immigrants will be charged out-of-state tuition whether or not they reside in North Carolina.
  • Undocumented immigrants may not register for classes until the final registration period each semester.
