Cyndi Caviness
(May 10, 2023) – Alamance Community College has announced Cyndi Caviness, Allied Health instructor in Occupational Extension, as the recipient of its 2023 Workforce Development Instructor of the Year Award.
Caviness has taught allied health classes in Workforce Development since 2016 when she was invited to establish and teach the college’s Phlebotomy program. Since then, she initiated a partnership between ACC and Labcorp that provides clinical rotations for phlebotomy students. Caviness also works with Labcorp human resources representatives to provide each graduating class with information about the benefits of Labcorp employment.
Over the past seven years, Caviness has also taught EKG, Medical Scribe, Insurance Coding and Billing, and Medical Terminology, primarily in online classes.
Caviness has a diverse medical background. After earning her degree at Stanly Community College in Respiratory Therapy, she worked as a Critical Care Respiratory Therapist in a major regional hospital. After 20 years, she earned her credential in Medical Assisting at Central Carolina Community College and worked in family medicine and surgery. This led Caviness to Montgomery Community College where she served as Director and Lead Instructor in Medical Assisting from 1998-2017. She also has credentials as an Allied Health Instructor (AHI) and Certified Medical Scribe Professional (CMSP).
According to ACC student testimonials, Caviness regularly goes above and beyond to help them, reaching out to give individualized assistance and making herself available by email seven days a week, day and evening. Caviness often schedules extra time with students as needed during in-person lab classes to instill them with confidence as they practice new skills. Students praise Caviness for using a variety of methods to teach specific skills.
