All Basic Skills programs provide basic educational opportunities for adults aged 16 years or older, and are held at the Carrington-Scott Campus (Graham), at the Burlington Center, and/or at corporate and community sites throughout Alamance County. Prior to enrolling, the student is required to make an appointment with a basic skills assessment specialist by calling 506-4376.

GED Program–Call 506-4376

This high school completion program is designed to prepare adults for the General Educational Development (GED) tests. Areas of study include writing and reading, social studies, science and math. The State Board of the N.C. Community College System awards students a GED diploma upon a satisfactory score on the GED tests.

This program is designed to complete the GED program lessons by mail.

Adult High School–Call 506-4376

This program offers a high school diploma for an adult who did not graduate from the public schools. The individual is required to pass the North Carolina Competency Test and complete 22 units of credit for completion. Credits may be earned by attending one of our two class sites. Classes are available during the day and evening. The diploma is issued by the Alamance-Burlington School System and Alamance Community College.

This program is for those who need to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills through the eighth-grade level.

This program is for those for whom English is not the primary language and who are interested in improving their English speaking, reading, and writing skills.

3-D ILLUSTRATION AND ANIMATION PART I

Access

Access is a full-featured relational database that is part of the Microsoft Office suite (professional edition). This beginner’s Access course is designed to acquaint you with setting up databases. You will learn to design a database so that information is entered only one time in one table but linked (related) to other information. For example, information about a customer can be entered only once and that information can be related to information about sales in another table. Importing data is a simple way to put Access to work for you. Have you ever needed a quick way to move data from Excel to Access? You can do it by importing data from your worksheets into a new table.

Adobe Illustrator, Introduction: Level I

This course is an introduction to the Adobe Illustrator digital illustration software. It is a full-featured illustration program widely used in the creation of logos, informational graphics, illustrations and even graphs. Students will learn the core basics of Illustrator through the use of exercises, interactives, and demonstrations. Prior to taking this course students should be familiar with the basic skills associated with the use of computers, such as using a mouse and saving file folders on the desktop or disk. Basic Computer Use (Windows XP/Vista)

This beginner’s course is appropriate if you have some basic knowledge of operating a personal computer. In this course you will learn procedures common to all Windows programs. The instructor will teach file management; how to set up folders and subfolders; and how to move, copy and delete files. You will also learn to cut and paste, copy, move, drag and drop, and use the “save” and “save as” commands. Taught by a professional digital photographer, this course will cover basic photographic knowledge, digital storage of images, using digital processing, and design considerations. Excel (Microsoft) for Windows

Excel is a full-featured spreadsheet program that is part of the Microsoft Office package. Currently the most widely used spreadsheet in business, this program has enormous capabilities for manipulating and analyzing numeric data. In these classes, you will learn Excel functions such as building formulas, editing and formatting cell contents, filtering data, charting, working with multiple spreadsheets, and pivot table. Every business can benefit from a Web presence. Using basic tools available on nearly all PCs, you will learn to use basic HTML code to design, build, and publish a simple Web page. General Contractor License Preparation

This course is designed for individuals seeking to become licensed as a general contractor in North Carolina. While the course is not required in order to be eligible to sit for the exam, it is designed to help improve your chances of passing. Course topics discussed that the contractor’s exam covers include licensing requirements, building codes, insurance requirements, pertinent employment laws and blueprint reading. This course is NOT a course on construction techniques and terminology nor does it tell you how to organize subcontractors and schedule construction. You should either have a very strong background in reading and interpreting architectural blueprints or take the basic “Building Blueprint Reading” course.  There is a significant amount of books and materials used in the class, the purchase of which will run about $400-$500.  NOTE: While course information will be appropriate whether you are seeking the commercial or residential license, the course is geared primarily to the residential license. Firefighter Cadet Training Program

This program is designed to prepare individuals for employment as firefighters. It will include the coursework necessary to complete Firefighter I & II certification as well as the coursework required for EMT certification. You must be able to pass a pre-entrance physical and a reading comprehension test. Classes will meet Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is an excellent way to prepare you for a career in firefighting in the shortest time possible. Medication Aide Certification

This 24-hour course is designed for candidates seeking Medication Aide certification in North Carolina, leading to listing on the North Carolina Registry. Students will receive instructions in the correct policies and procedures for administering medications. Topics will include, but not limited to, drug interactions, side effects, and administration of liquids, pills, subcutaneous injections and topical treatments. Upon successful completion of this course the student will be eligible to take the N.C. state medication aide examination administered by proctor at ACC. Participants must be a certified nursing assistant on the North Carolina state registry and, when signing up for this course, must show proof of high school diploma or GED. HRD focuses on the development of basic workplace skills by providing skill assessment services, employability skills training and career development counseling to unemployed and underemployed adults. The HRD program is student-centered and focuses on the creation of developmental activities geared towards the acquisition of work-related skills, the establishment of a variety of options for upgrading employment-related skills, and the development of proactive outreach and instructional strategies to help students reach their goals.

Job Training, Certifications and Licensure    

Activity director

This course is designed to provide basic training to individuals desiring to become an activity professional in a health care-related setting. Activity directors for adult care homes are required by the N.C. Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR) to complete a minimum of 50 hours in an approved activity director course. Activity directors for nursing facilities are required to complete the 50-hour course with an additional minimum of 10 hours in documentation, including the assessment and care planning process. This state-approved course is an overview of the activity profession, human development and the aging process, standards of practice, activity care planning, and methods of service delivery. *Textbook required. The Alamance County Health Department requires that a certified pool operator be on staff at every public swimming pool. Starting a small business is easy at ACC.

The SBC provides current or potential small business owners a variety of opportunities to increase their knowledge of small business management and the business start-up process. The center provides free, confidential counseling and referral services and free or low-cost classes, workshops, and seminars on business topics. Preregistration is required for all events.

Come visit the SBC located within ACC’s Burlington Center to seek advice and use our business resource library. The SBC has access to the Internet and NCLIVE (inter-library exchange) as well as government forms, publications, and information.

Accounting for Small Business

Proper accounting and recordkeeping is essential to be successful in business. Both computerized and manual accounting systems are included in our accounting course sequence. “Small Business Accounting” is an introduction to accounting terms and procedures in a manual/paper system. After learning the basics of accounting you can learn to maintain your records on the computer with the QuickBooks Pro accounting software package. R.E.A.L. Entrepreneurship

This eight-week business planning course for potential and new small business owners will help you develop a comprehensive business plan and necessary business skills. Topics covered include realities of self-employment, personal and business budgeting, market and industry research, legal issues, cash flow and break-even projections, customer service, recordkeeping, and operations. Biofuels (Biogas, Alcohol, Biodiesel)

This course will cover the evolving industry of sustainable renewable fuels (alcohol, biodiesel, methane and cellulose products) to replace fossil fuels (gasoline, diesel, natural gas and coal). Green Shelter

This course is an introduction to Green Shelter Techniques. Course will cover design systems such as LEED and NC Healthybuilt homes. Alternative building materials and techniques and the safe and proper use of tools will also be discussed. Site consideration and modeling will be examined as well as foundations, walls, and roofs, and interior and exterior finish. Renewable Energy

Renewable energy is on everyone’s mind today as concerns over global warming and conventional fuel grab headlines. This course takes the mystery out of renewable energies, and explains solar energy, wind energy, and energy from biomass. Students will learn how energy conversion affects the environment, and the benefits of renewable energy on air pollution and global climate change. Discussions will cover the technologies used for collecting renewable energy and converting it into thermal or electrical energy. By the end of the course students should feel prepared to contribute to the design and selection of renewable energy systems. Teacher Assistant Program

This program is for individuals whose objective is to become a teacher assistant, who wish to be effective in the classroom, and who desire a better understanding of how students learn. This 96-hour course, along with a successful completion of the COMPASS, ASSET, or WORKKEYS exam, fulfills the requirements in North Carolina to become a teacher assistant. No previous college education or teaching experience is necessary.

Utilizing Technology for READING Instruction (new!)

The focus of this course will be for participants to learn ways to integrate technology and multimedia with reading/literacy instruction. It will use a combination of demonstrations, discussions of readings, evaluation of Internet resources, and the opportunity to add to participants’ resources for classroom instruction. Participants are encouraged to bring at least one flash drive and a three-ring notebook.

THE INCREDIBLE YEARS FOR TEACHERS (NEW!)

This evidence-based course is for early childhood teachers of children ages 2 to 8. It is designed to help these teachers improve their classroom management by emphasizing the social and emotional development of children in this age group. Participants must be a teacher currently working in a classroom with children in this age range. Also, directors/assistant directors must take the course either before or with teachers from their facility. Part of the course will involve the course instructors making visits to the participants’ classrooms. The course will meet every other Saturday at the office of the Alamance Partnership for Children (APC).
