Students may take ABE and GED courses online from any computer with Internet access. Online courses are ideal for those whose schedules or physical limitations make it difficult to attend class in a regular classroom setting.

Students who do not have access to a home computer may use the computers in our Academic Skills Lab, in our Learning Resources Center, or in any of the public libraries in Alamance County. Computers may be used on a space-available basis at these locations, so they should be reserved in advance.

There is no charge for Adult Basic Skills Online courses.

For more information about Adult Basic Skills Online, call Coordinator Joey Crotts at (336) 506-4302.

GED in the Community is a flexible option for students who need or want to study from home.  Participants complete a series of 10 lessons through the mail in postage paid envelopes.  Students are expected to return lessons weekly and to come to the Assessment Center for progress testing, practice and official GED tests.  Instructors return each lesson corrected and offer tutoring through the phone and in person.  Lesson 1 (link to Lesson 1) is available for pick up in various locations throughout Alamance County, can be mailed directly to your home, or printed out and completed.  New students must mail in a completed Lesson 1 before attending an orientation for GED in the Community.  For more information, call Lynn Ferns at (336) 506-4379, or the Assessment Center at (336) 506-4376.

ESL programs are also available through correspondence telecourses. You can improve your English language skills from home with video-based correspondence courses. Students who are motivated to work independently are encouraged to participate. Instruction is through videos watched from home; students need to have access to a VCR and TV. Students are expected to come to campus at least three times during the course, but the majority of the work is completed at home. Weekly contact with the instructor is expected via telephone, e-mail, or drop-in office hours.

The GED course prepares students to take the official GED tests. The ESL course is designed to help advanced beginner and intermediate ESL students improve their written and spoken English skills. A certificate of completion is awarded upon successfully finishing the courses. An online citizenship test preparation course is currently under development. There is no charge for any distance learning course.

To sign up for an ESL telecourse, call Linda Clark at (336) 506-4380 or the Assessment Center at (336) 506-4376.
