The Adult Basic Education (ABE) and GED programs provide individualized instruction for adults to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills at any level.

Adults who have not graduated from high school may complete their high school credentials through GED. Adults who have completed high school may enroll in GED courses as a refresher.

ABE and GED classes are offered both in the classroom and online.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

The ABE program works with basic reading, writing, and math skills through the sixth grade level. Courses are held at the main campus, at the Burlington Center, and at corporate and community sites throughout Alamance County. Students may enter ABE courses at any time and progress at their own pace.

There is no charge for ABE courses.

To enroll, contact the Assessment Center (336) 506-4376.

General Educational Development (GED)

The General Educational Development (GED) program prepares adults to take the five GED tests to complete their high school credentials. Areas of study include Language Arts: Writing, Language Arts: Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. Upon successful completion of the GED program of study and a satisfactory score on the GED tests, students are awarded a GED diploma by the State Board of the North Carolina Community College System. The GED is a nationally recognized legal equivalent of a high school diploma. It serves the same purpose as a high school diploma in meeting most job requirements and is accepted in place of a high school diploma at most community colleges and four-year colleges and universities.

Persons interested in taking the GED tests must first complete a Student Success Orientation to determine if they are ready or need some preparatory coursework.

The pretest is given in the Assessment Center at the main campus. Special arrangements may be made for persons who do not speak English or who have a handicapped condition. Courses are held at the Burlington Center and at corporate and community sites throughout Alamance County. Students may enter GED courses at any time after an initial assessment and progress at their own pace. While there is no registration fee for GED courses, there is a $7.50 fee for taking the GED tests. Scholarships are available to qualified applicants to cover the fee.

Potential students who are 16 or 17 years old and who wish to enroll in the GED program have very specific requirements that must be met before they may be admitted. These requirements may include (but are not limited to) a release form to be signed by the superintendent and the principal of the school where they last attended, and notarized and signed by the parent or guardian. Also, there may be a waiting period before enrollment. Both the school system and ACC will have more information on current requirements.

Just as in the public schools, 16- and 17-year-olds must meet state requirements as set by the Drivers License Program or lose their license. The requirements for the Drivers License Program are to attend six consecutive months, to attend 60 hours per month (20 days), and to make reasonable academic progress.
