Library Information for Distance Education Students

1. HOW CAN I GET A LIBRARY CARD?

Contact the library by telephone, e-mail, or mail, or come in person and ask for a registration form. If you choose not to come in person, mail the completed registration form back to us along with a copy of a picture ID to: Director, Library, Alamance Community College, P.O. Box 8000, Graham, NC, 27253-8000. We will keep it on file in the library and use it to check out information when you request it. Our phone number is 336-506-4116. Our e-mail address is lrc@alamancecc.edu.

2. HOW CAN I GET BOOKS OR AUDIO-VISUAL MATERIAL?

Let us know by e-mail, telephone, or in person what material you need. We will check our catalog for the material and mail it to you. If we do not have the item, we will ask if you would like us to get it from another library through interlibrary loan. This takes a little longer - usually about one week. The library catalog is available on this web site, so you will be able to look through our collection and the collections at most other community colleges in North Carolina. See the section of this web site on interlibrary loan for an explanation of how to request a book from another library.

3. WHAT LIBRARY SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE LIBRARY WEB SITE?

· Library Catalog - for finding books, DVDs, and videos

· Databases - for finding articles

· Interlibrary Loan

· NC LIVE

NC LIVE is also available from your home by obtaining a password from the library. NC LIVE provides users access to hundreds of databases. These databases cover a wide variety of subjects and provide indexing and full-text articles for thousands of journal and magazine articles.

4. HOW DO I GET A PASSWORD FOR NC LIVE?

Passwords can be requested through the library in person, or by calling or e-mailing the library (see #1.)

5. HOW DO I GET REFERENCE SERVICE FROM HOME?

The library staff will be happy to answer your reference questions or assist you with your research. Call the reference librarian at (336) 506-4208, or e-mail your questions to us at lrc@alamancecc.edu, and we will contact you with answers or suggestions to help you complete your research. If we need clarification, we will get back in touch with you by telephone or e-mail. Or you may chat with a librarian at NCknows.

6. WHEN IS THE LIBRARY OPEN?

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. On Friday, we are open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During fall and spring semesters we are open on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon. If you call when we are closed, please leave a message and we will respond the following work day. You can e-mail us at lrc@alamancecc.edu and we will try to respond within 24 hours.

7. WHAT HELP CAN YOU PROVIDE IF I HAVE VISION PROBLEMS OR OTHER SPECIAL NEEDS?

We can provide assistance in a variety of ways, but special needs students should first contact the Coordinator of Special Needs in the Student Development office, phone number (336) 506-4130.
