Searching Academic Search Premier

About the Database

EBSCO's Academic Search Premier is a database of full text articles and citations from thousands of journals, magazines, and newspapers.

Use this database when you need general, recent coverage of a research topic.

Entering the Database

Go to www.nclive.org. If you need a password, contact the library (see below.)

On the left side, under "Browse by Category," click on "Magazines & Journals."

Click on "Academic Search Premier."

Basic Searching

For a simple search, type your subject into the space provided, check the "Full Text" box, and then click on SEARCH.

Important Note: If you are unable to find good articles on your subject, please contact the library staff for assistance.

Viewing Your Results

You will see a list of articles about your subject.

To see more detail about the articles listed, hover over the magnifying glass icon.
To see the full article, choose "HTML full text" or "PDF full text."

Printing/E-mailing/Saving Articles

Choose the delivery method you prefer (e-mail, save, or print.)

Returning to Your List of Results

To return to the list of articles you found, click on "Return to Results List." To change your search words, click on "Refine Search."

Narrowing Your Search--What to Do If You Get Too Many Articles

Using two or more keywords is one way to be more precise. Use and to connect your keywords. For example:

diabetes and children

Broadening Your Search--What to Do If You Don't Get Enough Articles

Sometimes your search may result in only one or two articles and you will want to increase your results. To do this use or. Or will give you either one keyword or the other (or both). Use or for synonyms such as: hunting and (puma or cougar or mountain lion). Always place in parentheses keywords connected with or.

Truncation will also increase your results. The purpose of the truncation symbol

* (asterisk)

is to give you all the variations of a word. For example:

plan* will find all the following:

plan, plans, planned, planning, plane, planet, planetarium, planter, plankton.
