Patrol Response to Opioid Overdose Investigations | Main Campus - Auditorium |
Patrol Respond to Opioid Overdose Investigations will provide students with an overview of the magnitude of the opioid epidemic and how it affects members in our communities. In addition, students will learn basic steps relative to non-fatal and fatal opioid overdose incidents to include, fact gathering, on scene witness interviews, drug identification, report writing, and officer safety precautions when working these cases. Also, students will learn updated and current legislation when making charges in certain cases such as trafficking heroin/opium and death by distribution statues specific to the people who are dealing narcotics to the victims. At the conclusion of the class, instructors will review a fatal overdose case that lead to the successful prosecution of the suspect who supplied fentanyl to the victim. This course is designed specifically for patrol officers who responds to fatal and non fatal investigations and how to take their investigations a step further in identifying suppliers and dealers in their communities. |

Intro into Internal Affairs Investigations |

This is a two-day introductory course that covers the legal considerations, investigative process and policy implications surrounding internal affairs investigations. Students attending this course will better understand policies that should be in place or enacted within their agencies, the legal requirements of the administrative investigation process and the mechanics of conducting an administrative investigation. The course will highlight how an administrative investigation differs from a criminal investigation and how the two investigations may run parallel. Students will also gain an understanding of the role and process used by the SBI when dealing with an officer involved death or corruption case. |

To provide the skills necessary to conduct enforcement activities associated with search warrants, warrantless searches, interviews, eyewitness identifications and nontestimonial identification orders and to avoid liability while conducting such activities. **Attendance is required at all class sessions. The student must participate in class and practical exercises, successfully prepare search warrants and successful completion of a written examination. It is required that students bring a recent/ UPDATED copy of the Arrest, Search and Investigation textbook written by Robert Farb and published by the UNC School of Government. Each student is required to bring the Red and Green case law books for PLI that can be purchased from the NCJA. |

Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) |

• Every patrol officer involved in the detection and apprehension of the impaired motorist should attend a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration approved SFST Training course. • Course consists of classroom instruction via PowerPoint and SFST student training manual along with practicals utilizing volunteers in a controlled environment, and completing the course with a written and physical proficiency exam. • Course topics included are: overviews of the DWI problem both from alcohol and drugs, validation studies / legal updates, the stop decision/exiting investigation, SFST administration and arrest decision including proper documentation. • Benefits of attending this course: builds confidence in the detection and apprehension of the impaired motorist, improves your application of the SFST battery, and makes your testimony more receptive in the courtroom. |

First Line Supervision is not just about the mechanics of "running" the squad or unit. It is a crucial position within any organization where policy is transmitted into action. Individual agencies should be responsible for instructing their personnel on the day to day functions of the department and their policies, procedures, and protocols. The goal of this 40 hour block is to provide the student with a deeper understanding of their role as a first line supervisor and the expectations of different groups of people they interact with on a daily basis. Topics covered: Management Tasks, Community-Oriented Policing and Problem Solving, Performance Appraisals, Coaching and Mentoring, Discipline, Supervision of Difficult Employees, and Tactical Operations. |

Field Training Officer (FTO) |

Field Training Officer is for law enforcement officers who are or will be assigned to provide field training to new officers. This course will provide the technical and personal skills to individuals in order for them to function as evaluators and trainers of recruits who have completed BLET, DOCC or new hires in Communications. Students need to bring their agency’s Field Training Officer Procedures Manual, and a blank copy of their Daily Observation Report (DOR). |

In order to teach many of the courses regulated by the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission, you must complete this 99 hour course. An applicant worksheet and the Agreement for Enrollment, must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the class. This is needed to ensure the applicant meets the qualifications (4+ years of law enforcement experience, Microsoft Word & PowerPoint knowledge, etc.) necessary to enter in the class. |
