Prior to registering for an online course, you should take this Self-Assessment.


1. Before the semester starts you should e-mail your instructor (or the department head) and tell them you have registered for their course. You can access the instructor or department head e-mail address at:

2. The first day of classes you should set up your ACCess e-mail account. This is the e-mail account that your instructor will use to communicate with you throughout your Moodle course.

  • Go to https://my.alamancecc.edu/#setupaccount
  • Fill out the form and submit.
  • Log-in to "My ACCess” https://my.alamancecc.edu/ (remember your ACCess userID and password)
  • Log-in to "ACCess Email" http://access.alamancecc.edu/

3. You may log-in to Moodle before the first day of class, but your enrolled courses will not be visible until the very first day of each semester.

  • Go to www.alamancecc.edu
  • Click on the green Distance Education tab
  • Go to the Moodle Log-In tab (or simply go to
  • Type in your username and password in the upper, right-hand side of the screen (refer to #2 above to figure out your username and password)

4. If your home computer does not have Mozilla Firefox as an Internet browser, install it by going to the free download site:

While ACC does recommend that you use Mozilla Firefox, we cannot accept any responsibility for any problems you may encounter with installing or using Firefox or any other software you may acquire for use with Moodle or any of your online courses.

Word Processing software and ability to save files in rich text

Mathematics:

MAT 115 – On-campus testing requirements

MAT 060, 070, 080, MAT 151 – Administrative rights to install My Math Lab plug-ins on the computer. Need speakers on computer.

Office Systems:

OST 131 – PC with Pentium II or higher; Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000 or XP; 32 MB RAM for Windows NT, ME and 2000 or 128 MB RAM for Windows XP; 210 MB of free space on hard drive; MS Word 2000 or higher.

OST 141 – Sound recording capacity on computer

Psychology and Sociology:

Writing intensive, and you will need PowerPoint (or reader) and the ability to save files in rich text.

Computer Information Systems:

Beginning fall semester 2011
the Computer Information Technology Department will switch to Microsoft Office 2010.  This will make a change necessary in the materials students will need to have for the course.

ALL students will need to have a copy of the new textbook and additional listed resources:

Shelly/Cashman Microsoft Office 2010 – Introductory, by Shelly, Vermaat, 1st edition, from Course Technology, also bundled with
the student training and assessment web access license
In addition, ONLINE students will also need regular access to a reliable Internet connection, Microsoft Office 2010 software (with Microsoft Access), and a computer workstation with the following minimum requirements:


PC

  • Processor: Intel Pentium 4 or higher processor required; Intel Centrino or an equivalent multi-core processor recommended
  • Memory: 512 MB RAM required; 1 GB RAM recommended
  • Operating Systems: Windows XP SP3 32- or 64-bit, Vista SP1 32- or 64-bit, or 7 32- or 64-bit; Macintosh OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard
  • Web Browsers: Internet Explorer 7 or 8, 32-bit versions only; Firefox 3.6 for Windows; Safari 4.0 for Macintosh OS X

Audio & Video

  • Graphics: SVGA
  • Resolution: Minimum recommended 1024x768
  • Color: 32-bit
  • Video Memory: 64 MB minimum; 128 MB recommended
  • Video Card: Modern DirectX compatible

Network

  • Internet connection: 56K modem minimum; broadband connection (cable, DLS, T1, or ISDN) recommended. Persistent connection required.

Software and Disk Storage

  • Web Browsers: 4 MB
  • Adobe Flash Player 10 recommended; versions 9.0.115.0 or higher have been tested and are supported; versions prior to 9.0.115.0 are not supported: 2 MB
  • Adobe Reader 8 minimum; 9 recommended: 22.4 MB
  • Microsoft Office 2010 Professional for Windows for SAM Projects. Please refer to your Microsoft documentation for current disk storage requirements.
