Nursing

The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides individuals with the knowledge
and skills necessary to provide nursing care to clients and groups of clients
throughout the life span in a variety of settings.
Courses will include content related to the individual, the healthcare system and nursing. Course content will also relate to the nurse's role that is characterized by evidence based clinical practice in the provision of client care.
Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council
Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) which is required for practice as a Registered
Nurse. Employment opportunities include hospitals, long term care facilities, clinics,
physician's offices, industry, and community agencies.

Pre-nursing
Prior to being admitted to the nursing curriculum, students are advised by a nursing
faculty member and should take courses as prescribed. These courses include: MAT060, MAT070, ENG070, ENG080, ENG090 or RED070, RED080, RED090.
Prior to the admission of students into the nursing curriculum, all grades below C (including Incomplete) on courses attempted that are required in the nursing curriculum must be repeated and a grade of at least a C earned. In addition, the student's overall GPA must be a 2.0 or above. Science and psychology requirements which are completed prior to admission to the nursing program must have been within 5 years.

Associate Degree Nursing Program
Admission to the nursing curriculum is competitive and based upon the selection
of those candidates who possess the ability to succeed in a demanding academic
program. The number of qualified applicants accepted will be determined by
available clinical facilities.

Awarding of Admission Points and Selection Procedures
1. General Biology (BIO111) or transfer equivalent within 5 years.
A or B = 2 points, C = 1 Point
2. General Chemistry (CHM131&CHM131A) or transfer equivalent within 5 years .
A or B = 2 points, C = 1 point
3. Microbiology (BIO175) or transfer equivalent within 5 years.
A or B = 2 points, C = 1 point
4. Statistics or College Algebra (MAT151or MAT161or transfer equivalent.
A or B = 2 points, C = 1 point
5. Hours of Clinical Experience in Human Care Within the Last 5 years (EMT, CNA, MA, CMA).
500 hours = 2 points
250 hours = 1 point
All Clinical hours must be completed and turned in by May 31st.
6. CNA certification or MA Associate Degree from an accredited college or agency, with clinical hours. = 1 point
7. Computer Coursework (CIS110 or CIS111 or related transfer equivalent). May be institutional transfer or high school articulated credit. = 1 point
8. High School Allied Health II (B or higher). = 1 point
A total of 13 possible points. Applicans will be ranked according to the points they have earned. When applicants have identical point totals, they will be ranked according to the earliest application date to the nursing program.
9. The last day to apply for fall admission is April 30th.

The following requirements must be met before an applicant may be considered
for admission to the first year of the nursing program.
• Compliance with Performance Standards for Students in the Nursing Program
signed
• High school diploma or equivalent. The High School Equivalency Certificate
must meet the standards of the North Carolina State Board of Education.
• Placement Testing/Course work Alternative (Contact Admissions Office)
• Conference with Admissions Counselor.
• Application must be completed and submitted as stated in current ACC catalog.
• Health report, documenting emotional and physical health, completed by a
physician, nurse practitioner or physician's assistant. Thereport must be submitted by the specified date. The following immunizationsare required: DPT or Td; Td booster; Polio; Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR);Varicella and Tuberculin Skin Test or Chest X-ray. Immunization for Hepatitis Bis recommended but can be waived by the student.
• A college level general chemistry course and a general biology course taken
within 5 years with a grade of C or better.
• Current certification by the American Heart Association in Cardio-pulmonary
Resuscitation (CPR/BCLS); currency must be maintained.
Criminal background check will be required for some clinical agengies.

Progression and continuation
1. For continued enrollment and progression, nursing curriculum students must maintain an overall quality point average of 2.0 and must not have a grade below C in any course required by the nursing curriculum.
2. For continued enrollment, all students must meet the standards related to emotional and physical ealth within the framework of nursing practice (note Physical and Emotional Policies) and must adhere to all other policies set forth in the Nursing Student Handbook).
3. Nursing curriculum students who receive a grade less than C in any course required by the nursing curriculum will be dismissed from the curriculum and will be considered general technical students.
4. First year nursing students who receive a grade of less than C in the first semester must be readmitted via the selecton process for new applicants.
5. Students who receive a grade less than C in courses occuring after the first semester of the curriculum must meet readmission criteria. Readmission is on a space available basis.
6. A student may repeat a course required by the nursing curriculum only once. If a grade of less than C is made on a repeated course, the student is not eligible for porgression or readmission.
7. A student making below a C in more than one nursing class in one semester cannot apply for readmission.

Licensed Practical Nurses
Priority consideration will be given to Alamance County residents and those
employed in Alamance County health care agencies who meet the established
criteria. Licensed Practical Nurses will be admitted to available class openings
using the following criteria:
• Must be a graduate of an approved PNE program
• PNE program transcript must show a minimum grade point average of 2.5,
with no less than a C in any course
• Prerequisite accomplishment of a chemistry and biology course within 5 years
with a grade of C or better
• Current unrestricted license to practice nursing as an LPN in the USA
• Recommendation from immediate supervisor in most recent employment and
Dean or Director of Nursing at school attended
• Personal interview with the appropriate faculty advisor
• Satisfactory completion of first year nursing competency examinations or
course work
• Health report including immunization record completed by a physician, nurse
practitioner, nurse midwife or physician’s assistant. The report must be current,
be on the form supplied by the college, and submitted by the specified date.
• Current certification in Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); currency must
be maintained.
Placement testing/course work alternative (Contact Admissions Office):
LPN's may take the NLN Nursing Challenge Exams in fundamentals and maternity nursing. If the exams are completed successfully, students may receive up to 16 credit hours. Credit hours may also be given to students who have completed pharmacology and nutrition as part of their LPN course work. If a student did not have these two courses as part of their LPN programs, these courses can be taken once admitted into the nursing program or credit by exam, as these are required courses within the curriculum.
Consideration of applications for admission of LPNs with advanced standing will
be made prior to consideration of application for readmission of students who
have withdrawn from or been dismissed from the nursing curriculum.
A criminal background check may be required for some clinical agencies.

LPNs, with advanced standing are those who have met all admission criteria,
have been advised by the faculty LPN adviser each semester of enrollment, have
been enrolled as advised for at least the preceding three consecutive semesters,
and have made written application including all required supporting documents.
All admissions as an LPN with advanced standing will be made on a space
available basis. Admission is not automatic for LPNs with advanced standing. LPN admission occurs in the summer semester day schedule. The LPN will then have three semesters to complete.
Determination of available space is made by considering the number of students
that can be accommodated by the available clinical sites and the number
of instructional faculty.
LPN applicants may be required to audit specified courses prior to progression
in the nursing curriculum. Audits may be required for courses which have previously
been taken. All tests must be taken in required audit courses.

Transfer of Students into Nursing Program from other
North Carolina Community Colleges
1. The student seeking transfer must file an application in the ACC Admissions
Office. The ACC application must indicate transfer request and the semester/
year in which the student wishes to transfer. The student must apply and
enter within two years of leaving the previous educational institution.
2. The student requesting transfer must meet the College and Associate Degree
Nursing program admission requirements for the college year into which
he/she transfers.
3. The student must have been in good standing at the time the individual left the
program and must provide a written recommendation from the Dean of the
previous nursing program.
4. All transfer credit must be submitted to the office of Student Services by March 1st.
5. The individual must interview with the Nursing Department Chair who will
review course outlines from the nursing program in which the student was
previously enrolled. This review will determine the student’s placement into
the ACC nursing program. This review must occur no later than one month
prior to the beginning of the desired semester of entry.
6. Selection for transfer will be based on date of application, available clinical
space, and meeting of the above criteria.
7. The individual must submit a completed Student Medical Form, which is
required for Human Services programs, documentation of current CPR/BCLS
certification, proof of major medical insurance and liability insurance. A criminal backgound check may be required for some clinical agencies.
8. In order to graduate from ACC, a maxium of 50% of degree requirements can be transferred from all sources and a minimum of 25% major nursing courses must be taken at ACC. Transfer credit is limited to those nursing courses that occur in the first year of the program. Transfer of science abd psychology courses must have been taken nor more than five years prior to enrollment at the college.

Readmission to the Nursing Curriculum
1. Students who are dismissed from the nursing program for academic or nonacademic
reasons or those who withdraw are prohibited from taking major nursing courses.
2. Applicants for readmission into the nursing curriculum will be considered following
submission of a letter to the Director of Enrollment Management (in student services) and the Nursing Program Director detailing the deficiency received while enrolled and the semester the readmission is desired. Readmission letters should be received sixty days prior to the semester the readmission is desired.
3. Applicants for readmission into the nursing curriculum will need to fill out new college application.
4. Following the receipt of the letter, a nursing counselor (in student services) and the
Nursing Department Chair will review all applications for readmission. Applicants for readmission will be ranked competitively according to the criteria listed:
A. Past performance in the nursing program.
B. Reasons for interruption of the previous enrollment.
C. Successful health-care provider activities pursued during separation from
the curriculum with accompanying employer recommendation. Insight in
addressing special conditions or problems related to the dismissal from the
curriculum.
D. Academic standing at time of dismissal.
5. Determination of available space is made by considering the number of students
that can be accommodated by the available clinical sites and the number
of instructional faculty.
6. Applicants must apply for readmission to remediate or continue in the program
according to the following guidelines:
A. Readmission requires an overall quality point average of 2.0 or greater.
B. Readmission is on a space available basis.
C. Readmission into the curriculum is granted once.
D. Readmission is subject to current admissions criteria.
E. Readmission must occur within two years of an academic dismissal.
F. Applicants must meet all requirements for readmission which include current health record, CPR certification (American Heart Association) and TB test.
G. Readmission is not automatic.


Termination in the Nursing Curriculum
A student may repeat a course required by the nursing curriculum only once. If a
grade of less than C is made on a repeated course, the student is not eligible for
progression or readmission.
A student making below a C in more than one nursing class in the same
semester is terminated from the program and is not eligible for readmission.
