FEDERAL WORK-STUDY PROGRAM

Federal Work-Study is offered after a student has expressed interest in working in this program. The aid is awarded as part of a student's total financial aid package to assist in meeting educational expenses while attending Alamance Community College. Funding for work-study is allocated through Title IV funds from the federal government and ACC. A student must apply for financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form to determine eligibility.

The Advantages of Student Employment

Work-Study provides many advantages for the student and the employer. Flexibility of scheduling around class hours is one of the top advantages for students, while providing valuable work experience for a future resume. Students generally provide much needed assistance to supervisors while making valuable contributions to the College community.

When and How Much Can Student Employees Work?

Students may work up to 15 hour per week depending on the dollar amount awarded by the Financial Aid office for the academic year. The class schedule of the student and the needs of the supervisor determine the workload for student employees. Students typically are awarded funding for one full academic year and the employment period ends June 30, the last day of the fiscal year. It is up to the supervisor and the student employee to determine if the student will work during semester breaks and vacations.

Payroll Information

Student employees are paid on the last day of each month. The pay rate for students entering the program for the 2007-08 academic year is $6.50 per hour. Payroll information must be submitted to the Financial Aid office prior to employment and cleared by Human Resources and the Business Office. Time sheets are submitted to the Financial Aid office by close of the second working day following the end of the month.

Responsibilities of Student Employees and Supervisors

Student Responsibilities Include:
  • Submitting the appropriate employment documents and paperwork to the Financial Aid office prior to beginning the assignment
  • Maintaining an accurate timesheet and having it signed by the supervisor by the second working day following the end of the month
  • Notifying your current supervisor and the work-study coordinator if you stop working or stop attending college

  • Applying for financial aid and meeting all priority deadlines
  • Taking a 15 minute break for each four consecutive hours of work as prescribed by law
Supervisor Responsibilities Include:
  • Coordinating the work schedule with the employee
  • Certifying co-op and enrollment status, verifying, signing, and submitting time sheets to the Financial Aid office
  • Tracking the student's total wages for the academic year to ensure that the student is not exceeding his/her total award
  • Monitoring the quality of the student's work

Termination

Student employment may be terminated for unsatisfactory performance, habitual tardiness, chronic absenteeism, or failure to follow the rules set by the office or department where the student works.
