ADMISSION

Through the "open door" admissions policy, it is possible for the College to provide educational opportunities for a high school graduate or equivalent, a school leaver 18 years old or older, a school leaver 16 years old who has been granted proper release from a public school system, or an individual attending a public school who has obtained required approval.

The "open door" policy does not eliminate the restrictions on admission to specific programs. It does mean that these restrictions will be flexible enough, that with careful guidance, students will have every opportunity to prove themselves through good teaching. Students will have the opportunity to remove admissions requirement deficiencies through developmental work. As soon as students can meet the specific admission requirements, they may be considered for admission to any curriculum program.

Applicants are encouraged to complete admission procedures at least 30 days prior to registration. Applying early is important since enrollment in some programs may be limited. There is no application fee. Applications and other admission materials may be obtained by visiting or calling ACC's Student Development office or through area high school guidance counselors.

To be admitted to a curriculum program at Alamance Community College, the applicant must be a high school graduate or its equivalent (GED). High school equivalency certificates that meet the standards of the North Carolina Board of Education are accepted.

Freshman, Transfer, or Readmit Admissions for Degree or Diploma Programs
  • Complete and return the application form.
  • Submit a high school transcript or GED scores. Students with an earned associate degree or higher completion from an accredited college or university may waive this requirement.
  • Take the College's placement tests or submit acceptable SAT/ACT scores. College level courses in math and English may be used to waive placement testing. Prescribed minimum scores may vary by program and are periodically altered. Students who score below these levels are placed in selected developmental courses, depending on the program and the scores. Students not meeting minimum score requirements for selective programs are counseled and appropriately advised.
  • Submit official transcripts of all postsecondary education.

Certificate Programs

Individuals applying for certificate programs must complete an application for admission and submit a high school transcript or GED scores, or a college transcript which documents high school graduation. Placement tests are not required for admission to certificate programs. However, in some programs, placement tests can be taken to satisfy specific prerequisites.

Visiting Students

A student who is currently enrolled and seeking a degree at another institution, but wishes to take additional course work at ACC as a nondegree student, must complete an application.

Students are advised to secure written permission from the home institution, specifying what course work the student is permitted to take. Alamance Community College does not allow a student to enroll for more than 23 semester hours in any given term without recommendation from the appropriate associate dean. Visiting students with concurrent enrollment will be bound by this policy.

Visiting students must be in good academic standing with their home institution.

NonDegree Students

Students who are enrolled for course credit but not in a curriculum leading to a certificate, diploma, or degree are classified as nondegree. Nondegree students will be enrolled in classes where space is available. Students seeking degrees will be given priority for available class space. Nondegree students will normally be required to meet the prerequisites for the course or to demonstrate a necessary level of competency by an appropriate test.

Provisional Status Students

Students who lack sufficient admissions data for their files at the time of registration are considered to be provisionally admitted students. Students classified in this manner must provide all necessary data following actual enrollment.

International Students

Alamance Community College is authorized under federal law to enroll nonimmigrant students. ACC welcomes international students who have completed an equivalent to a 12-year secondary education in the U.S. and possess the requisite English proficiency skills necessary to be successful in any of our programs of study.

International applicants are required to submit official transcripts from any college(s) attended. Translation of these documents into English is required. It is the applicant's responsibility to secure the services of an independent academic credential evaluation provider. These providers will charge a processing fee. We recommend the following providers:

WES (World Education Services, Inc.) www.wes.org

ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.) www.ece.org

In addition, international applicants must also submit (or have forwarded to ACC), an official TOEFL test score report. Minimum admissions scores on the TOEFL test are:

TOEFL = 550(paper-based), 217(computer-based).

Upon official acceptance to the College, applicants may also be required to take the College's placement tests (COMPASS) for use in English and math course placement.

Once the applicant has met the above academic admissions requirements, he/she will then submit a notarized affidavit of sponsorship form requiring specific information about his/her sponsor and his/her commitment to be financially responsible for the student for the duration of the student's stay. Students meeting this and all above admissions requirements must then deposit on account $6,500.00 U.S. dollars in the ACC Business Office for use in payment of tuition, books, and other fees.

The DSO (designated school official) will then release an official acceptance letter and an I-20 form to the student for use in applying for the F-1 student visa in his/her home country.

Visa Clearance Form (for transfer students only)

The college that the student is currently attending completes this form. A photocopy of the student's I-20, I-94, and the visa page of the passport is also required. A student must be enrolled for at least one semester in the college that originally issued the I-20. An official transcript from that school must accompany the application.

English and Math Placement

Proficiency testing in basic mathematics, algebra, grammar, and reading is required for placement into entry-level math and English course work. Students should consult with the Student Development staff for specific testing information. Students who meet required scores on the placement tests or who present acceptable SAT scores will be placed in appropriate entry-level courses. Students who score below required levels may be required to take developmental courses. Students may request to submit SAT scores instead of taking the placement tests (with the exception of the nursing curriculum). Students may also request to utilize prior college level courses completed at a "C" or higher grade in lieu of placement testing (with the exception of the nursing curriculum). Such requests should be directed to the Student Development office. Testing takes place at the College on a posted schedule.

Transfer Credit

Alamance Community College allows transfer of credit for students from accredited postsecondary institutions, military schools, and other postsecondary institutions, provided the courses represent collegiate course work delivered by qualified faculty. In all cases, the following conditions must be met:

  • The course is required for graduation at Alamance Community College.

  • The course was passed with a "C" or higher grade.
  • The course closely parallels the content and competencies of the course it replaces at Alamance Community College.
Transfer credit is awarded by an admissions counselor following guidelines approved by the various academic departments. The awarding of military credit is based on recommendations in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experience in the Armed Services, published by the American Council on Education. Students are notified by mail of awarded credit within the first semester of their enrollment. A maximum of 50 percent of degree requirements is transferable from all sources.

Transfer credit courses are not used in the computation of the student's quality point average in his/her program at Alamance Community College. A candidate for a certificate, diploma, or degree must take a minimum of 25 percent of his/her major courses (excluding credit by exam) at the College.

College Board Advanced Placement (AP) Program

Advanced Placement exams may be used for college credits in the following areas if score requirements have been met. Students should note that individual departments might require that this competency be current before advising students to enroll in higher level coursework. Some departments also require that scores be current for admission into their program. Students should contact the college admissions office for specific requirements. Official score reports should be sent to the Admissions office.
