Oil Painting

In these classes learn a variety of skills and techniques for working in oils. Two basic methods may be chosen: speed or traditional. Speed painting involves the use of large brushes, and often a painting can be completed in a single, three-hour class session. The traditional painting method emphasizes finer detail through the use of smaller brushes.

Pottery: Hand And Wheel Thrown

In this class learn to mold clay by hand and “throw” the clay on a pottery wheel. The clay objects are kiln fired, painted, or glazed using a variety of techniques, and then fired a final time. This class is for beginners through advanced students and includes instruction on using patterns, cutting glass, grinding and foiling edges, and soldering pieces together. Picture Framing

This high school completion program is designed to prepare adults for the General Educational Development (GED) tests. Areas of study include writing and reading, social studies, science and math. The State Board of the N.C. Community College System awards students a GED diploma upon a satisfactory score on the GED tests.

This program offers a high school diploma for an adult who did not graduate from the public school. The individual is required to pass the North Carolina Competency Test and complete 22 units of credit for completion. Credits may be earned by attending one of our two class sites. Classes are available during the day and evening. The diploma is issued by the Alamance-Burlington School System and Alamance Community College.

Access

Access is a full-featured relational database that is part of the Microsoft Office suite (professional edition). This beginner’s Access course is designed to acquaint you with setting up databases. You will learn to design a database so that information is entered only one time in one table but linked (related) to other information. For example, information about a customer can be entered only once and that information can be related to information about sales in another table. You should be very familiar with Windows and the other parts of the Office package before taking this class. Call 506-4311 for more information.

Basic Computer Use (Windows XP/Vista)

This beginner’s course is appropriate if you have some basic knowledge of operating a personal computer. In this course you will learn procedures common to all Windows programs. The instructor will teach file management; how to set up folders and subfolders; and how to move, copy and delete files. You will also learn to cut and paste, copy, move, drag and drop, and use the “save” and “save as” commands. You will learn how to go from portable storage devices such as CDs to the hard drive and vice versa and how to customize your Windows desktop. Call 506-4311 for more information.

Digital Photography and Design

Taught by a professional digital photographer, this course will cover basic photographic knowledge, digital storage of images, using digital processing, and design considerations. This course is ideal if you wish to include digital photos in brochures, web pages, and e-mail. Due to diversity of media, the course will use SmartMedia software as the basis for instruction and PhotoShop Elements as the photo editing software. Excel (Microsoft) for Windows

Excel is a full-featured spreadsheet program that is part of the Microsoft Office package. Currently the most widely used spreadsheet in business, this program has enormous capabilities for manipulating and analyzing numeric data. In these classes, you will learn Excel functions such as building formulas, editing and formatting cell contents, filtering data, charting, working with multiple spreadsheets, and pivot table. Web Page Design for Business

Every business can benefit from a Web presence. Using basic tools available on nearly all PCs, you will learn to use basic HTML code to design, build, and publish a simple Web page. Topics will include cross-browser access, designing fast loading pages, site organization, search engine submission and positioning, and simple interactivity with customers. Methods for acquiring Web space (hosting), securing a domain name (e.g. www.yourbusiness.com), and maintaining/upgrading a Web site will also be covered. In order to get the most from this course, you should already know how to “surf the net,” save and open files on a disk, and use a text editor (Notepad, MS Word, Works, or WordPerfect). This full-featured word processing program, a part of the Microsoft Office package, is currently the most popular word processing program used in business. This program has tremendous capability for working with all sorts of written communications. Firefighter Cadet Training Program

This program is designed to prepare individuals for employment as firefighters. It will include the coursework necessary to complete Firefighter I & II certification as well as the coursework required for EMT certification. You must be able to pass a pre-entrance physical and background check, as well as a reading comprehension test. Classes will meet Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is an excellent way to prepare you for a career in firefighting in the shortest time possible. This 24 hour course is designed for candidates seeking Medication Aide certification in North Carolina, leading to listing on the North Carolina Registry. Topics will include but are not limited to drug interactions, side effects, and administration of liquids, pills, subcutaneous injections and topical treatments. Activity Coordinator            

The North Carolina Administrative Code states that an activity coordinator working in an assisted living, nursing home, group home, or adult day care facility must complete a state approved Activity Coordinator Training course within 9 months of employment. This course meets the state requirement. If you have a degree in recreational administration or a related field, you meet this requirement and are not required to take this course. ACC offers this course only one time a year in the Spring. Courses In Conjunction With The Coast Guard Auxiliary

About Boating Safely

This course is an updated version of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary’s popular America’s Boating Course targeted to the new boat owner/operator. Basic boating terminology, rules and regulations, right-of-ways, seamanship and safety considerations are topics covered to make the boating experience safer and more enjoyable. Course material provided includes a textbook, an interactive CD-ROM, and access to a supporting Web site. Graduates may be eligible for discounts on boat insurance. Eight hours, taught in four, two-hour sessions. Class size is limited to 12 students.

            GPS For Mariners

Learn essential global positioning system concepts and how it applies to the small boat owner. Discover the functions of your GPS from the basic to the more advanced. The SBC provides current or potential small business owners a variety of opportunities to increase their knowledge of small business management and the business start-up process. The center provides free, confidential counseling and referral services and free or low-cost classes, workshops, and seminars on business topics. Pre-registration is required for all events.

Proper accounting and recordkeeping is essential to be successful in business. Both computerized and manual accounting systems are included in our accounting course sequence. “Small Business Accounting” is an introduction to accounting terms and procedures in a manual/paper system. After learning the basics of accounting you can learn to maintain your records on the computer with the QuickBooks Pro accounting software package. This program is for individuals whose objective is to become a teacher assistant, who wish to be effective in the classroom, and who desire a better understanding of how students learn.
